When your water heater is leaking, what should you do? First and foremost, you need to turn the gas off. A red handle controlling gas supply to your water heater should be given a quarter turn to be perpendicular to the gas line.
Next, the water needs to be turned off. Locate a ball valve on a line running from the wall to the water heater. Give the ball valve a quarter turn. Your water is now off! This does not mean the leaking will stop, but rather no additional water will enter the water heater system. This includes tank and tankless systems.
